The Hospitality Industry in England covers hotels, restaurants, pubs, bars and nightclubs, hospitality services, youth/backpacker hostels, holiday centres and self-catering accommodation. It operates across well-known chains and in small businesses, including owner/operators, which make up just under three quarters of employers in England.

In order to support employers and employees within this industry we have designed a set of qualifications that can be used by those already in and those wishing to enter into employment within the hospitality sector in the areas of food and beverage service. For those already working within the industry these qualifications can be used to upskill their ability within their current working environment.

For those wanting to enter into the industry these qualifications provide the knowledge, understanding and skills required by the sector to carry out an efficient food and beverage service. The knowledge and skills a learner will obtain from completing these qualifications range from “Food Safety” and “Giving customers a positive impression” to more specialised units such as “Providing a counter and takeaway service” and “Preparing and serving dispensed and instant hot drinks”.

On completion of these qualifications learners can enter into employment as, but not be limited to, the following roles:

  • Waiter
  • Silver Service Waiter - food and beverage or food services
  • Bar/cellar person
  • Take Away assistant

The minimum age for access to these qualifications is 16. However, units relating to preparing and serving alcohol are restricted to those aged 18 and over.

All of the competency units within these qualifications must be assessed in line with People 1st’s assessment strategy which can be found below.
