The Small Animal Care and Welfare qualification offers learners the opportunity to gain knowledge and practical skills to look after small animals. They will gain knowledge of first aid that is applied to animals and the welfare needs of animals. It will give learners knowledge to recognise illnesses and injuries; they will be able to examine an injured animal and be aware of treatment differences. Other skills to be gained are in treating wounds, dealing with choking and with poisonous substances. They will be able to treat burns and provide information to pet owners.On achievement of the qualification, learners will know how to assess the welfare needs of small animals, care for them, monitor their health needs and deal with animal behaviour.

'Small' animals refer to dogs, cats, hamsters, guinea pigs, mice and similar sized domestic animals. 

In order to deliver this qualification, centres must meet the requirements to deliver the qualification (which can be found in the Qualification Guide) and complete the Qualification Approval Form (QAF).
