About this qualification
The Open College Network West Midlands Level 4 Certificate in Medical Equipment Technologies supports individuals to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of medical technologies. Working towards achievement of the qualification provides learners with the opportunity to build on existing engineering skills while simultaneously developing new areas of expertise and knowledge applicable to the medical equipment technologies sector.
Centres offering this qualification will be able to provide information to learners about possible
membership of the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estates Management (IHEEM)
while undertaking a course of study leading to the award of this qualification.
Objectives of the qualification
Depending on the context of the learning and the needs of each individual learner, the qualification can:
- prepare individuals to progress to a qualification in the same subject area but at a higher level such as the Level 5 Diploma in Medical Equipment Technologies or requiring more specific knowledge, skills and understanding
- prepare learners for employment
- support a role in the workplace.

To be awarded the Open College Network West Midlands Level 4 Certificate in Medical Equipment Technologies, learners must achieve:
- all 34 credits within the Mandatory Group M
The learner must be working in a medical engineering role and either working towards or hold a nationally recognised level 3 qualification in a related subject and hold English and Maths GCSEs at grade C or above, or equivalent.
Portfolio of evidence.
Tutors:
To offer this qualification, centres must ensure that tutors have one of the following recognised professional qualifications:
- BA Hon in Engineering or equivalent or higher
- Diploma in Engineering
- Engineering HND.
and
- Have minimum of 5 years’ experience in a medical engineering role
Internal Quality Assurer (IQA):
Centres must also ensure that they have in place an Internal Quality Assurance person who:
- Holds or is working towards a Level 4 Award in Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practices or its equivalent.
- Has substantial experience of working in or assessing qualifications in Medical Equipment Technologies.
- Is familiar with the assessment requirements of the qualification for which they are the Internal Quality Assurer.
