New Units on Loneliness and Isolation

It was agreed by the Youth Work Forum Group to create and add an additional optional unit around Youth Isolation and Loneliness to our suite of Youth Work Practice qualifications at Level 2 and 3, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent disruption to normal events for young people.

Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced so many young people into isolated circumstances, a survey of 2,000 young people in the UK by the Co-Op Foundation found that:

  • Almost two-thirds (65%) of young people think that loneliness is a problem for their generation
  • 81% say that fear of others’ reactions would stop them talking about feeling lonely
  • Fewer than one in ten (9%) think that their age group is confident discussing loneliness.

(Source: All our emotions are important - research from Co-op Foundation).

We hope that by choosing these units from the Level 2 Certificate and Level 3 Certificate or Diploma, more Youth Work Practitioners will be confident to work together with young people to tackle loneliness.

Details of the new Loneliness and Isolation units are:

  • Loneliness and Isolation for Young People - Basic Youth Work Approaches L2 CV3. Unit Code: GA8/2/NQ/001 Ofqual Unit Reference: K618/6078
  • Loneliness and Isolation for Young People – Advanced Youth Work Approaches L3 CV4. Unit Code: GA8/3/NQ/002 Ofqual Unit Reference: Y/618/6075

These units outline the knowledge and skills underpinning work on Youth Loneliness and Isolation in Youth Work.

Detailed guidance and links to resources are provided and learners must have access to a real work environment.
