Latest update on Access to HE - July/August

Latest update on Access to HE - July/August 2022

The Summer Term is coming to an end for most of our Centres which means that our Final Award Boards (FABs) have taken place. Across the academic year at least 60 FABs have taken place, with over 3000 Diplomas awarded. The Team has enjoyed attending these to verify learners’ achievement and to see how well learners have succeeded across a year which has presented many challenges relating to COVID-19.

In addition to the awarding of complete Diplomas, there has also been learners awarded partial achievement and some who have had extensions agreed to complete their studies.

We send our congratulations to all of the learners on their achievement and wish them the very best for their future plans. Our thanks also extend to the Centres for their commitment and for how they have tirelessly supported their students, and our Curriculum Area Moderators and Centre Reviewers who are integral to this successful outcome.

New Diplomas

Since the last update, the following Diplomas have been validating at a panel:

  • Access to HE Diploma (Criminology)
  • Access to HE Diploma (Veterinary Science)

The AVA are currently in the process of updating Quartz and the website on which all specification documents will be available. Meanwhile, if you are interested in delivering one or both of these new Diplomas, please contact the AVA at for further information.

Arrangements for award of Access to HE 22-23

The arrangements for award of Access to HE in 2022-23 were recently released by QAA and shared with Centres. This has confirmed that the Extraordinary Regulatory Framework (ERF) will not apply to students starting their course from 01.08.2022.

Other key messages were:

  • Continuing students who were registered before 01.08.2022 will not be permitted to have adaptations to the method of delivery, units delivered or assessments tasks on or after 01.08.2022   However, principles of quality assurance will apply to any adaptations approved and commenced prior to 01.08.20221 and any students who experienced extenuating circumstances due to the pandemic prior to 01.08.2022. The AVA will confirm further details in September.
  • The Award through Extenuation process, which was introduced in response to the pandemic, will remain thus meaning in exceptional cases where a student cannot be assessed due to no fault of their own, the student may still be awarded unit(s) that make up the Diploma through this process

Information has been published on QAA’s websites and can be accessed via the links below. Please ensure these are shared with your team and students who are continuing or enrolling in 2022-23:
