Latest update on Access to HE - January / February 2022


Since the last newsletter, the Access team hope that all Centres had a good Christmas break and the opportunity to relax and recharge ready for the Spring Term. At the heart of Access is always the achievement of learners and their progression to higher education. December and early January involved some final moderation of assessed work for learners who had completed their studies leading to Final Award Boards taking place. These learners will now be able to confirm their HEI offers, with some commencing later in January. The AVA would like to congratulate all learners on their success and wish them the very best with their future studies.

The appearance of the Omicron variant has certainly been experienced by many and the government’s focus remains on keeping educational establishments open and for learning to continue. This is a reminder that the ERF arrangements for the awarding of Access to HE Diplomas, and particularly the opportunity for adaptations to delivery mode, assessment methodology and or units delivered, continue to be implemented.  Any adaptations need to be approved by the AVA prior to being implemented. Centres can also choose to plan and seek approval for adaptations that may need to be applied if situations change later in the year. A number of our Access to HE Centres offer courses starting in January and across the year. The AVA has actively promoted such opportunities through social media and on its website, with further details accessible here, and look forward to discussing the recruitment with Centres across January and February.


Interim Moderation and Coordinator Forums

January is set to be a busy month starting with the commencement of Interim Moderation Part B requiring CAMs to moderate a sample of assessed work. The AVA has supported the process this year by using submitted assessment planners from Centres to identify the units to be sampled. Interim Moderation Part B is to be completed by 25th February 2022.

The second Coordinator Forum of the year will take place on 25th January 2022 via Zoom. The agenda and relevant papers have been distributed. In addition, the nominations have opened for The Brian May Access to HE Learner Awards. Learners can be nominated for outstanding achievement or commitment to study. Successful nominations will be awarded £600 to support their progression. The closing date for the nominations is the 10th of March 2022 so please do make some time to discuss potential nominations within your teams. Each year, a successful award winner is nominated for the Keith Fletcher Memorial Awards, an award for Access to HE Learners across the country. Access Manager, Pam, has participated in the judging this year and we eagerly await to find out the success of our own application. The Access team look forward to welcoming attendees to the Coordinator Forum and to receiving nominations for the learner awards.


Diploma Review and Revalidation

The review of feedback received from the Diploma Review and Revalidation Working Groups will be completed by early February. Panels will take place in March 2022, following which Centres will be updated regarding changes which have been made.

As a reminder the following Diplomas are included in the revalidation plan for 2021-22:

  • Access to HE Diploma (Computer Science and Mathematics)

  • Access to HE Diploma (Science)
  • Access to HE Diploma (Social Science and English Studies)

Final Award Boards and Training

Although the summer may seem in the distance, to be fully prepared for the Final Award Boards (FAB), Access Coordinator Andrea will be in touch with each Centre to confirm their FAB date so that AVA representatives can then be allocated. This year, AVA representatives will also take the role of the Chair at the FAB.

Laura, our Access Adviser, will also be running two training sessions in March 2022 – one concerning Assessment and Grading and a second relating to Internal Moderation. Further details about the sessions and how to book a place can be found here. Sessions are suitable for new assessors or Centres and can also act as a refresher for existing staff. Bespoke sessions can also be discussed with the Access team.

The Access team’s weekly drop-in support clinics will continue to operate via Zoom. These are opportunities to speak with a member of the team in addition to the usual email and telephone communication modes.
