Dudley College excelling with Access to Higher Education

Dudley College have been a recognised Open College Network West Midlands centre for over 15 years. During that time, we have worked with and facilitated significant changes to the College’s Access to Higher Education provision.

Rated “Outstanding” by Ofsted, Dudley College operates in one of the most deprived areas of the country so their commitment to widening participation is hugely important.

The College offer and run very successful Access to HE programmes in the following areas:

• Access to HE Diploma (Health) (3 entry points each year)
• Access to HE Diploma (Health Science)
• Access to HE Diploma (Midwifery) (2 entry points yearly)
• Access to HE Diploma (Medicine and Allied Professions)
• Access to HE Diploma (Science)
• Access to HE Diploma (Education)
• Access to HE Diploma (Social Science) (2 entry points yearly)
• Access to HE Diploma (Sport Science)

Access to HE Diploma (Humanities) From September 2018 subject to approval.

The College are currently working with their IT department with a view to exploring the Access to HE Diploma (Computer Science) once it is available for delivery.

They recently took up our Pearl offer, which is an online learning platform developed with our partners, Pearltech UK Ltd.  This has enabled them to offer blended options to learners. They have run a pilot group of health students who completed their Diploma through a blended learning route with some units being delivered through Pearl online. This enabled them to attend college one day per week offering an option for those who cannot commit to more time in college. This is currently working well for both the College and students.

The Access to HE Team at Dudley College have embraced the many changes with Access to HE Diplomas and actively provide professional input into Diplomas under review by attending meetings with us. All staff attend standardisation events which enhances their practice and enables them to meet other providers across the West Midlands. New staff are also released for training with Open College Network to ensure they have an understanding of the assessment and grading processes.  Within the experienced team of dedicated staff delivering the Diplomas they have staff with vocational qualifications in Nursing, Midwifery and an Army Medic and a laboratory Scientist. All subject teachers are fully qualified in their subject specialisms.

Due to the changes in Diplomas, the College found some students needed to complete some study prior to starting their Access Diploma at Level three and we introduced the Open College Network West Midlands Skills for Further Study Level 2 qualification to develop skills confidence and academic writing. They have found that learners who have completed the Level 2 study thrive well on their Access Diploma.

We are delighted to have Dudley College as a centre and continue to look forward to developing our working relationship.
