Corporate Governance – why a qualification might help

Thursday, 13 December 2018

Being a governor in an educational or training establishment can be a really rewarding experience, and an effective Board of Governors can provide a school, college or training provider with excellent leadership and oversight.

But this may not be the impression you have if you have been reading the educational press recently.

From Emma Knights’ insightful article in TES that states; “School Leaders have awful...” understanding of Governance, through Tony Allen’s article on the crisis of leadership in the FE Sector, to the Schools Week article on Top Blogs of the Week by Julia Skinner, November seems to have been full of articles looking at leadership and governance in our schools, colleges and private training providers.

If you believe what you read, governors are no longer providing appropriate levels of challenge and support to organisational leaders in all levels of education and training.  Nor are they providing the right kind of financial oversight and management.

But, if you want to improve the quality of governance in your organisation, what support is there out there for you?

Whilst there are a number of CPD courses aimed at Chairs and Vice Chairs as well as those who lead committees, there is little help and support out there for ordinary parent and staff governors.
You may find some governor training and support available online, or through your Local Authority or you could try to unpick the Common Inspection Framework and those paragraphs that deal with what Ofsted look for, however, this is not a solution for all governors and prospective governors.

So, if you are a governor, or sit on a board of governors and feel that you would like to know more about the role of the governing body, the structure of a good governing body, or effective governance in a public sector organisation, you could look at the Open College Network West Midlands Level 3 Award in Corporate Governance.  Equally, if you are a school, college or training provider looking to support your Governing Body why not become a centre and deliver this training in-house to your staff?
  • Effective Governance
  • Strategy and Structures in Corporate Governance
  • The role of the Governing Body
  • The UK Context for Corporate Governance
This qualification provides an excellent foundation for those already working in a governor role, as well as providing a good grounding for those considering a role as a governor in a school, college or independent training provider.
