Another Taste of the Wild Outdoors

Wednesday, 17 July 2019
On Thursday 13th June 2019, we held our fourth free Forest Schools Taster Event.  This is the second event we have run in partnership with Staffordshire Wildlife Trust at their premises, who are an Open College Network West Midlands recognised centre.
Staffordshire Wildlife Trust deliver our forest School suite of qualifications
These qualifications range from:
  • the Level 1 Award in Forest School Ethos and Principles – which introduces learners to the Forest School ethos and learning in the outdoors; to
  • the Level 3 Certificate for Forest School Leaders - that prepares learners to learn practical skills and knowledge, enabling them to work as a Forest School Leader
Participants from a range of organisations attended the event to discover how becoming a Forest School Leader can benefit learners attending their Centre.
The morning started with a fantastic classroom-based talk from Duncan and Shaun who deliver Forest School training at the Trust. They explained the origins of Forest Schools and how children and young people are stimulated by the outdoors.  This type of learning increases the learner’s self-belief, confidence, learning capacity, enthusiasm, communication, problem-solving skills, team working skills and emotional well-being.
To be able to experience a range of activities carried out during a Forest School programme of learning, the group moved outside.  The activities included how to make a fire and knifework. The day was well-planned, informative and fun.  All participants were fully engaged with the activities and left with new skills and further knowledge of the Forest School ethos and learning in the outdoors.

Open College Network West Midlands would like to thank Staffordshire Wildlife Trust for organising and hosting the event with us. For more information on their Forest Schools training courses and other projects, please visit their website:
