Open College Network West Midlands Centres: Lifetime learning for all

The Black Country Skills Factory

The Black Country Skills Factory UKCES Futures Programme

Developing on the day Level 3 Assessments with Open College Network West Midlands

Colin Parker, Director of The Black Country Skills Factory, explains how working in partnership with Open College Network West Midlands has enabled this innovative project to develop 12 accredited courses for the manufacturing supply chain - the first of its kind!

“Open College Network West Midlands have been an invaluable partner in this process showing great flexibility and innovation to create 12 unique Level 3 assessments, which can be accredited on the day.”

The Black Country Skills Factory secured funding from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) through their UK Futures Programme, to pilot an innovative leadership and management programme for the manufacturing supply chain. This programme has been developed by a consortium of employers and employer representative groups from the automotive and aerospace sectors, with the aim to address the lack of operational management and leadership skills in the manufacturing supply chain.

The Black Country Skills Factory engaged the Open College Network West Midlands to develop the accreditation for each of the 12 courses within the programme. Open College Network West Midlands have now helped to create 12 units of accreditation at Level 3 through collaborative working with 10 different training providers and produced a tailored accreditation certificate.

The first years programme was successfully run in 2015.  Richard Sims, Senior Production Engineer from Eurac Group attended the first course (Basic Employment Law) and said:

“The course being delivered at an engineering company and the opportunity to network with like-minded people working at a similar level in the same sector, is a real positive and unique element that attracted me to these courses.”

The Skills Factory’s Leadership and Management Programme accredited through Open College Network West Midlands includes the following courses;
  • Lean
  • Problem Solving and Decision Making
  • Training the Workforce
  • Time Management
  • Material Planning & Production Control
  • Developing & Coaching Staff
  • Measurement of Production Efficiency
  • Appraisal & Performance Management
