Putting Dignity at the Heart of Care Services

Shirley Way at Staffordshire County Council talks about the important work being done to improve the care services throughout Staffordshire that is being pioneered through the delivery of professional training that the council has developed with Open College Network West Midlands.

“Working in Partnership with Open College Network West Midlands and the new Vic Theatre Borderlines has enabled us to provide a nationally recognised Award which will improve the care services in Staffordshire. We have found Open College Network West Midlands to be professional, supportive and knowledgeable and look forward to a continued relationship.”

Shirley Way, Staffordshire County Council Care Match Manager

Staffordshire County Council as a major employer is committed to providing a high quality of standards in health and social care and to create a care system where there is a zero tolerance approach to the abuse of, and disrespect towards, people who use care services.

Staffordshire County Council working in partnership with The New Vic Theatre Borderlines has run a project with schools in Staffordshire to offer youngsters an insight into what working with Dignity in Health and Social Care settings involves. For the last eight years they have provided youngsters with the opportunity to attend a Conference at the Theatre where, through watching inspirational drama and networking with service users and service providers, they have been able to gain knowledge about what working on the Health and Social Care sector is like.

Through a partnership with Open College Network West Midlands we were able to develop a Level 1 Award in Working with Dignity in Health and Social Care towards this aim. The Open College Network West Midlands Award provides youngsters with the opportunity to achieve recognition for their work. Open College Network West Midlands has also been proud to sponsor the Young People’s Conference for the last two years.

Staffordshire Council Care Match service has also piloted the delivery of training in Working with Dignity in Health and Social Care to staff across Staffordshire and has developed a successful blended approach to delivery through e learning and direct tutor contact.

Following this successful pilot  , Open College Network West Midlands has now developed a Level 2 Award for this sector that will further enable training to create a zero tolerance approach to abuse in the care system.
