Open College Network West Midlands Centres: Lifetime learning for all

RMF Construction

Helping to Change Lives – RMF Construction playing an important role in the West Midlands for Offender Learning & Rehabilitation through Open College Network West Midlands Accreditation Training Pathway to Work

Sarah Fahy, Head of Learning and Compliance at RMF Training Academy, explains how working in partnership with Open College Network West Midlands has enabled the business to develop a skilled and qualified workforce.

“The team at Open College Network West Midlands were incredibly flexible and responsive to our needs in developing a bespoke qualification and a range of accreditation frameworks for a variety of our training programmes at short notice”

RMF Construction is a growing business, providing high quality railway engineering construction staff for the sector.  In recognising the value of developing a skilled workforce the company has set up its own ‘training academy’ – RMF Training.  Furthermore, RMF Construction have developed links with the Probation Service and play an important role in Offender Learning and helping to rehabilitate individuals coming out of the Prison Service through offering guaranteed employment for those individuals completing the required accredited learning offered through the Training Academy pathway to work.

Within the following link there are several video clips showing how this programme has really helped people to help themselves by providing the high quality training to develop their professional skills and attributes necessary to advance both personally and professionally.

RMF  approached Open College Network West Midlands as they had been recommended to us and had expertise both within the construction sector and offender learning.  The whole process of setting up a new partnership was made very easy and cost effective with the support of a dedicated Open College Network West Midlands Business Development Manager.

Our initial requirement was to develop the  Open College Network West Midlands Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. This Ofqual regulated qualification provides a foundation in health and safety for individuals working or intending to work in the construction industry. The qualification covers:
  • improving health and safety at work
  • safe operation of equipment
  • risk assessment
  • working at height
  • manual handling.
The Award has one mandatory unit that is based on based on the National Occupational Standard COSVR641 (Conform to General Workplace Health, Safety and Welfare).

This qualification can also be used to support applications for some types of CSCS card. To obtain a card, learners will still need to take a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.

Following the success of this initiative we then asked Open College Network West Midlands to develop customised accreditation for the following short courses:
  • Asbestos Awareness
  • CoSHH Training
  • Fire Awareness in the Workplace
  • Manual Handling Training
  • Working at Height
  • Cat & Genny
  • Banksman Training.
Again, this was a very straightforward and cost effective process for us that Open College Network West Midlands were able to guide us through.
