Open College Network West Midlands Centres: Lifetime learning for all

Direct Claims Status

Where Open College Network West Midlands has established confidence in the Internal Quality Assurance arrangements of recognised centres they may be offered Direct Claims Status. This entitles Centres approved by the Open College Network West Midlands to directly claim the award of specified Open College Network West Midlands qualifications or customised units without the need for confirmation by an Open College Network West Midlands Quality Adviser or External Verifier.

Centres can be offered Direct Claims Status after they have been recognised for 12 months (or sooner if they meet additional criteria which can be discussed with the Quality Advisor). As long as your centre’s track record meets Open College Network West Midlands quality threshold it will then be considered for DCS.

Open College Network West Midlands will agree with the centre the courses and qualifications that DCS will apply to.

Open College Network West Midlands strongly recommend that staff involved in Internal Quality Assurance hold one of the following qualifications:

  • Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice
  • D34
  • V1

Where IQAs do not currently have one of these awards they will be advised to undertake a course leading to the ‘Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice’.

Additional Requirements for Direct Claims Status

Centres with DCS will undergo at least one quality monitoring visit per year. At this visit, a representative sample of learner work must be retained for scrutiny by your QA/EV.  As Open College Network West Midlands recommend that original work is returned to learners, it is allowable for copies of work to be retained.

Centres holding Direct Claims must also retain all Assessment and IQA records for the next Quality Assurance visit.

It is a requirement that where Direct Claims is in place, the Centre will submit learner work for standardisation where requested.

Failure to comply with the above requirements or failure to maintain evidence of robust Internal Quality Assurance will result in Direct Claims being removed.

Our full Direct Claims Policy can be downloaded on the left hand side of this page.
